Little Sickies

We finally took the girls to the Dr on Monday. They were just not themselves and you know how fast an ear infection can spring out of a cold.

They got weighed:
Abigail 16lbs 14oz
Olivia 14lbs 13oz

We were just telling the nurse that Abigail loves to pee, poop, spit up on, slime with spit, everything to her Daddy. Rarely to me, but it seems like he is always getting peed on by her. Just then she peed on the scale when Gary laid her down. Ha! For once she performed on cue!

Anyhoo - The pedi came in to talk about Abigail rubbing her eyes constantly to the point where she cries. Olivia waking up crying. After checking eyes, noses, throats, and ears, which she had to dig in Olivia's ear to get out wax (we are a waxy family). It was awful. She cried and cried than sniffled for a good half hour afterward. It was so pitiful! You could tell the pedi felt bad.

The diagnosis:
Abigail has allergies, poor baby, that she gets from her dad. She also had a red throat and fluid behind her eardrum. No new teething.
Olivia had an ear infection (so glad we took them in), and also a pretty red throat from all the drainage. It was kinda cute. Olivia wasn't all that fussy before we went to the dr, but as soon as we got home, she became fussy, clingy, and just more needy. It was like she said, "Oh yeah, I have all this stuff wrong and now I don't feel good.

So they are both on antibioics, allergy meds, and we are continuing the Prevacid. Abby will continue the allergy meds, but Olivia will just use them to help her get rid of all the gunk.

So needless to say we have had some fussiness going on around here this week. Olivia just wants to be held. You can tell she just doesn't feel good. She is also horse (hourse). Hopefully they will get well soon.

4 Month Check Up

Information packed appointment on Tuesday at their four month check up.

Abigail - 14lbs 14 oz 75th percentile in weight
Height is 24 1/4 in which is in the 50th percentile
Head circumference is 40.5 cm which is in 55th percentile (surprised it wasn't bigger)

Olivia - 13 lbs 1 oz Just under 50th percentile
Height is also 24 1/4 - same as Abby
Head is 39.5 cm - 35th percentile - she just has a petite little head.

Yes! That is almost 2 lbs difference in them! I feel it every time I pick them up, but I was surprised it was that much. They did get shots. Abby got all of hers, but we broke Olivia's up because she had a slight reaction to them last time so we wanted to pinpoint which one was the cause. Olivia went first and cried and cried and cried and cried. Big crocodile tears rolling down her face. It was heart breaking. She took a long time to calm down and then when Abby got hers it was like she remembered how bad it was and started crying all over again. Poor thing. Abby cried a little then settled right down.

Our Dr put Olivia on Prevacid as well to help with her reflux so we have 2 girls on the same meds. Hopefully the fussiness will get better now. We also started Abby on cereal!! Yay!! She drinks 10 oz more than Olivia every day. 10 oz people!! This girl is hungry! So we fed her some last night and she didn't know what to think at first but then she loved it. We got pictures of course and I will share them with you on Friday. Olivia doesn't really need cereal right now so we are holding off on her.

AND Abby is cutting teeth!! So that's why she has been so fussy! Poor thing got SO upset when the dr was showing us her little red gums. There are almost little nubs from her teeth so it may still be a few weeks. Fun, fun!

Our 4 month photo session went a little better thins time. Guess who was fussy?? I know what you are thinking. Olivia, right? Wrong! It was Abby this time that just wasn't feeling it.

We tried it with a white background

Will they ever smile??

The best ones of them by themselves

The Out-takes

Stay tuned for the official Friday check-up.
I have some great Halloween outfits and a priceless picture of Olivia.

Drs Appointment

Well we took the girls to the dr and wouldn't you know it. They were all smiles and cooing! It's like taking a car to the mechanic: it never does what you want it to so he can fix it! She listened to all of our worries and came to some surprising and not so surprising conclusions. They are constipated. Even though their poop is super mushy, they have to strain to push it out and are fussy before they have to poop. This was a surprise to us. We figured constipation = hard poop, but not so. She also said they have colic. That was not a surprise. We knew that but wanted advice on how to deal with it. We didn't get much more than sincere sympathy, but she did suggest either switching to a Lactose free formula or adding juice to their diet. Then if either one of those don't help, we will go to a Hypoallergenic formula, which is liquid gold for what it costs.

We are opting to switch formulas first then go from there. I went to Target to get formula (surprisingly the cheapest around, even Wal-mart) and they had the ready to feed on clearance so I got 8 cans. The girl who checked me out made a comment about how much formula I was buying and I told her we had twins...and this would last 4 days. She was shocked. Yep...it is expensive to have twins, especially if you don't breastfeed. Great, more guilt. Anyhoo...

Olivia is doing much better on this formula. She just smiled and smiled the past few days. There still fussy times, but I do think she feels better. I think Abigail needs to go back to Soy. She did better on it I think. Can you imagine what it will entail for the girls to be on different formulas?? But whatever it takes, right? Here's where those Bumpy Names can come in handy, right? Which reminds me. The owner of that website left a comment for anyone of my readers to have a discount when they shopped. So if you do want to order use coupon code #112081208 for 10% off. Thanks, Kay!!

Funny poop story time:
Abigail hates to be dirty...like, the minute she poops even a little, she screams to be changed. Never mind that she is not done. She will not poop any more until you clean her up. So every poopy diaper change is the same. She poops, screams and when we wipe her she continues to poop while laying there on her diaper. She cries after each little poop so we have to continue to wipe between poops. (Yes, I know, can you say high maintenance? I wonder where she got that from. Hmmm...). So the other day Gary was changing her and she was pushing extra hard to get it out. She had paused for awhile and Gary asked me if I thought she was done. I did so he went to put her new diaper under her. She grunted and POW! poop shot over the diaper, over Gary's hand, over the side of the changing pad and onto the floor. And not right by the table either, it was a good foot and a half away from it. If it wasn't so disgusting, it would have been beautiful. Gary had jerked his hand out of the way just in time to miss getting a handful (like he has before). Needless to say, Z got a huge kick out it as Gary and I stared dumbfounded at our tiny little girl who had done that. Ha!! What a little lady.

I am going to visit my school where I used to work tomorrow. We are also stopping at the in home day care where Z went for 5 years. He wants to show off his sisters. Hopefully the girls will not be too fussy. Please Lord....please....

6 week check-up

My dearest friends and family, I have decided that every Friday will be an update post on the girls, and Z. This way if you read this blog only for the girls and Z then you know what day to tune it. The other days will be my ramblings on who knows what. Thats not to say that the girls and Z won't be in any other posts, but the major updates will be on Fridays. Plus, this will make me update at least once a week.

First the good stuff about the girls.
They are getting to a great stage now. They really look into our eyes when we talk. Olivia will actually stop crying when we talk to her. She has started smiling more and more, especially in the morning when I sing to her. Abigail smiled at me for the first time this week. Aww!! They both stop drinking when Z comes to talk to them and they smile at him. They are good friends already! They are pretty oblivious of each other right now. But when one of them starts grunting or moving in their sleep, the other one will too, even if they are across the room from each other. I think this is the start of the twin talk I hear so much about.

My sweet Z with Abigail
She was fussy until we laid her down with him

Hmmm...thinking...thinking

We have really been wondering how much they weigh. So I got out my postal scale. White trash much? So here are their weights. Get ready to be shocked. I was.

Abigail 9 lbs 9 oz
Olivia 9 lbs 1 oz

HUH?? Where are my tiny babies?? I knew they were growing but I really didn't expect them to be over 8.5 at most. They just seem so big now! They are almost out of NB diapers and their NB clothes are getting tight. We were putting their preemie things away the other day and Oh my gosh how tiny they were!!

Now about the other side of our little darlings. They have a hard time going to sleep because they don't want to miss anything. Olivia especially just cries like her heart is broken when you know she needs to sleep and we are trying to rock her. Abigail will actually go to sleep on her own. Olivia will too every great once in awhile. Plus, they have the worst gas ever! They just scream at times because of it. The time of 7:00 - 9:00 to be more exact. In between this two hour block, Gary and I will be juggling both of them. It doesn't really matter what position they are in, they just cry and cry. We will try everything and it may work in short bursts, but then they start right back up. During this time we head upstairs to bathe and dress for bed. They like their baths, so that is a calm in the storm. They are on a really gentle formula now, but we may be moving to soy soon. Yucky, but necessary it seems.

What a sleep deprived Daddy looks like
and yes, that is a Boppy he is using for a head rest
My poor honey

What the girls look like when they are with Daddy

So I went for my 6 week check-up this week.

Everything's fine, of course. He had hard time telling which incision is his. He had to talk himself through it. "Ok, I do mine in the crease so you can't see it, so that must be mine." I could tell him which was which; yours is the longer one that is still hurting! But I digress - He said it was healing great. I guess so since you couldn't even tell yours from a 6 year old one!

I told him I had had a longer recovery than I thought. He called the nurse in there that helped him with the c-section and she reminded him of the details. It was like concrete, it took forever to get through it, etc. What I find out that I didn't know is that they could not even take my uterus out because of how much scar tissue there was. I guess they take the uterus out to check it and make sure the ovaries and tubes are good. Well, they couldn't get mine out to even do something or other to my bladder they usually do. Ok so no wonder I am still hurting (yes, still hurting, especially after my walk...more about that below). I am sure they tugged and pulled trying to get it out. Ok, I don't want to think about that anymore. Because of this, they could not see my ovaries and the condition they are in. So...

We discussed birth control. Something I thought I would never have to worry about again. He said that I need to be on something. WHAT?? I can't get pregnant remember? We did IVF? He said there was always a possibility of a tubal pregnancy or some other kind of problems that can happen. Ugh!! Really!! I can't even cash in on the one positive from this? No birth control?? He gave me samples of a low dose one. But here's the deal; I get mean when I'm on birth control. I have been on this one before and even with the low dose of the hormone, I was still pretty short, irritable, and just all around more nasty on it. So we may decide to do something else. Not really sure. I really don't want to be mean :-(

He cleared me for exercise, but I went for a walk around the block on Wednesday because it was 80 degrees outside instead of 100 for once. We made the loop only a couple of times until the sun came out and I felt great...until I started hurting...again. ::Sigh:: I am going to have to move back into it slowly I guess. It is so frustrating to me! I am not making very good food choices (note to self: 100 calorie snacks are only good if you don't eat 5 packages a day), so this means my weight is not going down like I want it to. I have been craving sweets like crazy!! Which leads me to...

I think I may be about to start for the first time since the girls have been here. I mean, it is about time. They are 6 weeks old. I am so much more tired this week than I have been, I am also very close to tears over everything. I was watching TV and everything that even bordered on sappy was making me tear up. I had some pretty low moments after Z was born and it was only in hindsight that I realized it was probably postpartum depression. I even got on some meds for it, but I got off of all of them when I went through IVF. Since I have dealt with depression since Z was born, I am really watching for it. I have been doing pretty good, but this week has been rough. So I am hoping I can chalk it up to PMS. I never thought I would say I hope to have PMS.

And I will leave you with an updated picture of me. Let me preface it by saying I am not happy with it. The clothes are too big and I need to cut my frizzy hair. I think I look pretty good , then I see the picture and just want to throw my hands up. But on the other hand, I have come a long way in 6 weeks. :-)

Success!!!! We have an actual date and time!!

That's me jumping up and down!

Well, as much as I can jump; more like moving up and down on the balls of my feet, but close enough, right?

I went in to see my OB today to confirm that everything is on for next week. He was making noises like he wasn't going to go ahead with it. Oh no, you di'ent!! But he wised up when I hobbled in clutching my back with one hand and my side with the other. I mean, 12 lbs of baby on my 5'3" frame is not pretty.

So the girl's b-day will be June 25th. Can you hear the heavenly angels singing? I can, because that means only 8 more days of this, then I get to see my sweet babies faces.

Now I am hobbling around trying to get all the last minute things settled and organized. I can't do much. I fold blankets then sit awhile; put the sheet on the pack n play then take a nap.

8 days and counting...

Peri Appt. and 35 Week Belly pic

Oh, thank the good Lord!! My peri said that anytime between 36 - 37 weeks will be fine for delivery. Which is....NEXT WEEK!! Whoo-hoo!!

Now we wait to see if my OB nurses can schedule it and if there is room. Please, don't tease me, Lord!! Let there be room for me!!

They measured for weights, but they are so off on Abigail it's not even funny. Olivia measured in at 5lbs 14oz, same as at the OBs. Abigail measured 6lbs 8oz. I mean, come on, that's a gain of 14 oz in 4 days...I don't think so. I am going by the OBs measurements last week. The sono tech even said that Abigail was very hard to get because she is so far down there. Plus, that severe edema I have in my lower tummy makes it impossible for them to see through it, so they have to go in sideways to even measure Abigail.

According to their scale I have gained a total of 46 pounds. Can I go by my OBs scale for this too, which only says a gain of 39 pounds?? I like that better, thank you very much.

Oh, and I am off of bedrest and pelvic rest. She said after 34 weeks they take woman off because it doesn't matter. Ummm...yeah...that was a week and 2 days ago. Did anyone tell me I could get up after 34 weeks?? No. That would have been nice to know that I didn't have to lay around all last week.

Here is my 35 week Belly Pic.
Pardon the lack of makeup and puffy face
and there's that darn pink shirt again.

I just couldn't resist posting this one too. See that lump on the right side?
That would be Olivia's butt or head. I am not sure which.
That is where she has been camped out and every once
in awhile she sticks it out like this.

OB Appointment

Abigail - 5lbs 11oz
Olivia - 5lbs 14oz

Weight - -3 39 lbs in all gained
Blood Pressure - great
Inches Around - 54"

Yes, people, that is over 11 lbs of baby I am carrying around. My OB said we are looking at 7 1/2 lbs each by July 2. He took a long time with us today. He listened as I pleaded my case to deliver earlier, but in the end the fact is, it doesn't matter how much the babies weigh, it only matters about lung development. He is very reluctant to move it up even a week. He said we would see what the specialist says on Monday, but if it is up to him, nope. Unless I want to do an amnio the week of to make sure of their lung development. Ummm, let me take a few hundreds of a second to think about that...NO!! Not just no, but heeellllll no! I would carry until August before I have an amnio this late in pregnancy or anytime for that matter. He checked my cervix and it is hard as a rock. He said I could carry on this pregnancy forever. Gee, thanks.

He was very sweet and told me that he can't imagine how uncomfortable I am. I really want him to do my surgery and he said he really wanted to do my surgery too. He also said that I was one of his favorite patients. Then he said, "and I don't say that to everyone!" I was doing pretty well to hold in my emotions until that point. You know how when someone is all nice to you, it makes you tear up if you are already emotional.

So, here we are. I have resigned myself to going all the way to July 2. I am still to be on bed rest. The facts are my body does not do normal things during labor time. I never actually went into labor with Z. My OB checked my cervix and whoops! a couple of hours later my water broke. I never had more than a few contractions before they started me on Pitocin. So, I don't go into labor. Even if I am carrying around 12-13 pounds of baby.

I know my posts have been downers lately do to that fact that I am freaking miserable!! Ahem...but I will try to do better. I need to just accept the fact that these babies will come when they are ready and not a moment before. There is a plan in place that is higher than me. I just have to remember that :-)

OB Appointment

Don't get your hopes up. I have no weights for the girls, and no new news.

They don't take weight measurements every week at this stage because mommys like me tend to get anxious if there is a loss of weight or no gain at this point, which would be normal. I hear that, but I was so disappointed. I really wanted to know if they are close to 5 pounds. They peeked at the girl's fluid levels (all are good) and then hooked me up to the heartbeat and contraction monitoring, which, in my expert opinion, was a complete waste of time. I had no contractions, I only have them in the afternoons and evenings. Plus, Abigail was so far down and hiding behind my severe edema place on my tummy that she couldn't get a reading on her. WASTE OF TIME!!

I had my nurse take a fundal height measurement just for giggles and I am measuring 47 weeks! Holy huge, Batman! She tried to tell me that the measurement she took was 33 weeks. Ummm...no, you don't measure 47cm at 33 weeks. I even tried to explain it and she said, "Well, you are measuring bigger because you are carrying twins" No, sh!t, Sherlock. Why is it that OB nurses are so ignorant of twin pregnancies? I mean, I even knew more than she did. She went to put the measurement in the computer and there wasn't a choice of 47cm. Surprise, surprise it only went to 42 and why?? Because when you are pregnant, drs only let you go to 42 weeks. She was shocked that it didn't go that high. Geez!!

Can you tell I am a little miffed today? :-)

My OB was in a hurry because there was a lady who was in labor with twins and he had to leave. I know if I was the lady who was in labor, I would appreciate him hurrying, but I wasn't. I was the lady who wanted to discuss how soon this party is getting started!

He said to continue with bed rest (dang it!). He also said he doesn't see me going all the way to July (whoo-hoo!). He went on to say that carrying twins to 34 weeks was great and they will be fine if they come on now. Well, then why the hell am I on bed rest?? I mean, if they would truly be ok then why can't I just continue on until I go into labor??

He also said how great I looked, blah, blah, blah. Next week I am going to wear an old shirt and sweats with no makeup and dragging my feet. Maybe then he will quit saying how great I look and send me to L&D.

OK, rant over for now.

Perinatal Appointment

Weight - +3 41 lbs in all (I am going by their scale not my OBs)
Blood Pressure - Ok
Inches around - still 52"

They did not do any measurements on the girls today. They looked at their hearts, but that was it. They did do a FFN test and checked my cervical length. My cervix is definitely opening, an obvious funnel now. It is fully open on the inside and has no length to it. I am not dilating, but she did put me on bed rest and pelvis rest, which means I can have no fun during said bed rest :-) She didn't seem too concerned about it. She said I just needed to stay off my feet now. She also said we would not stop labor after 34 weeks which is this Saturday, but I am thinking with bed rest we could still go a couple of weeks. I will feel better when they weigh 5 lbs.

Z has 2 more days of school left and I am still going to take him and pick him up. Then he is going out of town on Thursday with his dad so that is good timing. Sorry, this is so short and boring but I am just beat today. I am going to get started on my bed rest now.

I go to my OB on Thursday morning and I think we will have a better idea of where we are after I talk to him then. So stay tuned.... :-)

OB Appt

Abigail - 4 lbs 3 oz
Olivia - 4 lbs 6 oz

Blood Pressure - a little high for me 130/70

Weight - -4 34 lbs in all (yes, that is a loss of 4 lbs)
Inches Around - Still 52"

So my appointment was at 8:50.
I told the receptionist ladies that I needed a sonogram today because Dr Read said every week I needed one but he forgot to schedule it for today. They said they would check, then sent me back without checking with Dr. Read because he might do it himself. Since when does an OB do sonograms themselves?? I got in around 10:00, not too bad. Of course he said I needed a sonogram. So I settle down to wait to be fit in in-between regular appointments and the 5 (!) emergency ones they had to do. So long story short. I get out of there at 1:15!!! I had to get something to eat at one point because it was just getting ridiculous. Ugh!! The thing about being friendly with your doctor's staff is they tend to see you as more a friend and not a patient. I can't really complain about it because we do know each other so well, so I just sucked it up.

OK, on to the important info. Dr. Read says I am doing extremely well. He said that even with my cervix opening that I could still go all the way until July 2nd. He agrees that I have dropped. They had to go way down with the Doppler to hear Abigail's heartbeat. He reassured me that the baby's weights are good even though they haven't gained hardly any this past week. He said the sonograms can be inaccurate plus their weight gain does tend to slow down. This along with my actual loss of weight is not surprising. Keep in mind that we have two different sonogram machines and two different scales in two different Dr's offices going here. I saw both girls breathe, plus I got to see Abigail's face which I hardly ever get to see because she is so far down there.
Olivia is still laying transverse, across my belly. They were both moving like crazy and kicking up a storm.

All is well, again. He said he wants me doing next to nothing all day. I assured him that is my routine; next to nothing all day long, every day. I should be enjoying this because soon it will not be the case.

There was an over abundance of little girl babies in the office today. Believe me I saw a lot come through in the 2 and a half hours I was waiting!! Anyway, there was one that was 6 weeks old. She was so tiny, my gosh, tiny. She weighed 7 something when she was born so my girls will be at least a pound smaller than that and I just can't imagine it! The mom had her mom there to help her and I just thought to myself, "I will have two of those tiny things." It became a little more real to me. It is becoming more and more real everyday.

I can't wait to see my girls!!

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Peri Appointment

Abigail - 4lbs 2oz
Olivia - 4 lbs 1oz
(Yep, Abigail has finally caught up and passed Olivia in weight!)

Blood Pressure - Very good, like pre-pregnancy good
Weight - +5 - 38 lbs total ( since last week! )
Inches Around - 52"

Ugh! So it took 2 1/2 hours at the Peri's office today. We couldn't see much. They are laying in an exact " y " shape. Abigail is the long line on the right stretched out from top to bottom with her head down. Olivia's head is up and her body and feet are on top of Abigail. Are they laying nicely on each side so my tummy isn't huge?? No way, not my girls!! They are all piled up on top of each other and stretching my tummy to it's full extent. (So that's why I have new stretch marks that itch like crazy.) I was messing around with a big lump the other night and it turned out to be Olivia's head. I was tapping it and she was moving it around. I thought it was her butt! And...she has hair!! The peri could see fuzz around her head. Amazing, isn't it? They both have more fluid around them than is normal right now, but it is no need for concern. It just adds to my weight :-)

So they are both over 4 pounds now which means that if we go to July 2, we will be looking at having 6 pound babies!! But I don't see that happening because... she also checked my cervix and it is funneling. Well, since it is my body and my body can't possibly do something normally, it is not exactly funneling. It is opening from the inside, but in a long thin way, not a short wide way. So, I get to take it even more easily, not exactly bedrest, but staying off my feet as much as possible. I have to drink a gallon of water every day. Holy Crap!! Can you say in the bathroom all day?? I have to monitor my contractions and have to call if I have more than 4 an hour. So, I am hoping we can keep them in for another several weeks. 5 pound babies with healthy lungs would be good.

Ok, I am ready to stop gaining weight now. Since weeks 28 - 32 are twins' growth spurt time, their weight gain will slow down so hopefully my weight gain will too. Even though I am under the 50 - 60 lbs they recommend me gaining, I am heading toward 40 pounds quickly.

Friday, May 16, 2008

OB Appointment

Abigail - 3 lbs 10 oz
Olivia - 3 lbs 11 oz

Blood Pressure - excellent
Weight - +1 - 33 lbs total
Inches Around - Still 51
I think me and the girls grow in spurts.

We had a great appointment! I was even called his "star patient". Yay!! I had no problems to report and nothing to discuss so it was a short and sweet appointment. Sigh...which means I feel like a bit of an idiot for all my complaints last week. It comes in waves. There are weeks when I feel like I can't make it another day much less 7 weeks. On the other hand, there are weeks, like this one, when I feel I can go on for another 2 or 3 months. I feel big but I guess my body has adjusted since last weeks growth spurt. I hope this rides out for another 8 weeks, but if not, you'll just have to listen to some more whining from a huge pregnant woman.

On a brighter note, the girls are right on track. Abigail was breathing! Her little diaphragm was moving up and down. It was so cool to watch! Their weights are actually a little bigger than on track so that's good news! Grow, girls, grow!!

Surprise Sonogram Today

Abigail - 3lbs 3 oz
Olivia - 3lbs 6 oz

I had some issues and called my OB nurse. She told me to come on in. Immediately my heart dropped and tears came to my eyes because as uncomfortable as I am, these babies are not ready to come out!

Everything is fine. It turns out it is severe edema that has spread. He told me to cut down (even more) on my salt intake, put my feet up, and push water to help with the swelling. He spent a lot of time listening to the babies' heart beats. He had me turn this way and that way. I started to get worried, but he said that he just wanted to get right on top of them and not get an echo. He ordered a sonogram, which worried me even more, but he assured me that everything is fine. He just wanted to get a good reading of their heartbeats.

The girl's are fine and the sonogram went well. They have grown like crazy!! In one week Abigail gained 13 oz and Olivia gained 9 oz!! No wonder I am getting uncomfortable.

So all is well...

Glucose Test Results

I passed my 3 hour glucose test!! Yay! I barely failed the 1 hour one but they have to follow through with the 3 hour one. I am so glad I passed. It would not have been fun to have to watch every bite that I ate.

Thank you to all who ask about me on a regular basis. It is nice to be loved and thought about.

OB appointment - We have a date!

July 2nd!! He gave me a choice of that or June 30th. Since the 30th is my b-day, I went with the 2nd. He said by waiting until this date, it gives my babies the best chance in actually being able to come home with me. He also said we will have to monitor very closely those last few weeks so I will not into labor on my own. So, July the 2nd at the very latest is when these two darlings will be here. It is so great to have a date to actually get to. That's only 2 months away!

Let me pause by saying, "I love my OB!" He is a red-headed-with-freckles Jamaican and has this great accent. I know it is hard to picture, but he is wonderful! The scale was right after all, plus according to their scale, I gained 2 pounds since yesterday. Did he say a word about it? Nope! Well, other than "dang girl!" but no chastising, no "you need to cut back" nothing. The girls were moving around too much to get a good Doppler read on their heartbeats, but since I saw them yesterday and they are obviously moving around, I wasn't worried too much about that. When they kick the Doppler it make a huge noise and it is funny to see the nurses face as she tries to avoid that noise, but still get their readings. Nope, they were having none of it.

Z has started telling the girls good-bye in the morning when I drop him off at school. He'll say "Bye Abigail" to one side of my tummy and switch to the other side to say good-bye to Olivia. Then he'll rub his hands on both sides. I may have met my match as far his favorite person on earth. Soon his attention will shift to them and away from me. Gary and I already know where we stand. Every night when he prays, he says, "I am thankful for Ally ( the cat), the babies, Mama, and Gary." So we know the pecking order in our house :-)

One more thing, my RE (Fertility Specialist) shares an office with my OB and I see my nurses that helped me through IVF every time I go in and we chit-chat. Today as I was sitting there getting my blood work done for the 3 hour glucose testing, I realized I was sitting in the same chair I sat in back in October when I was going through IVF. That day the nurse told me that because of a sudden cyst on my ovary we were going to have to push back when we could start the next step of the process. IVF is such a delicate time table that any delay could mean starting completely over with the next cycle. And when you are in the middle of your infertility journey with hormones, shots, exams on a daily basis, any delay is heartbreaking. I remembered sitting there crying and my wonderful nurse holding my hand and telling me that it would be ok, that we would have a baby in the right time. (It turned out that the cyst went away and we were able to move forward as planned) As I sat there today with 2 beautiful baby girls snug inside me, remembering, it almost brought tears to my eyes. Talk about coming full circle, you know. I just have to take a moment and say a prayer of thanks that God has blessed us with these two miracle babies. How precious they are and how precious that I got a moment of reflection that prompted me to be thankful and grateful for where I am in my life right now.

Perinatal Appointment - Going the Distance

Abigail - 2 lb 8 oz
Olivia - 2 lbs 13 oz

Blood Pressure - 130/74 (a little high for me but still ok)
Weight Gain - +10 - 32 lbs total (Umm...can that possibly be right??)
Inches Around - 51 (3 inches in 2 weeks)

Really, really great appointment today. Short version: Everyone's great!

We got a good look at both girl's faces, but could only get a really good 3-D one of Olivia. Abigail was kicking back at the Sonogram wand like crazy. She had the hiccups, which is great because it means she is practicing her breathing! She is lying head down with her feet up in my ribs stretched out on the left side. Olivia is in a weird position on my right side. Her head is up and her feet are also close to the top, so she is breech right now, but can easily flip. It doesn't really matter what position they are in because we will have a c-section. Olivia also has more fluid than Abigail, which is not really a sign for concern by itself, but along with my glucose test (more about this below) and them being twins, it could point toward pre-term labor. They are doing a fetal fibronectin test, which tests to see if you will potentially go into pre-term labor in the next few weeks. Both of my previous tests have come back negative so I am expecting this one to as well. Their weights are right on target, in the 50th percentile for babies at this stage. This will drop in the weeks to come because their growth will slow down. My peri predicts 5 to 6 lb babies by 36 weeks.
So they are doing great!!

I failed my glucose test, dang it! This could explain Olivia's extra fluid if I do have gestational diabetes. Now I have to go back and do a 3 hour test which totally sucks!! I can't have anything to eat or drink after midnight and I go in first thing in the morning, so it could be worse. I usually have two meals and a snack by the time I will finish the test so I am sure I will be starving. Ok...now the weight gain thing. Can that be right?? It is a new scale, so it could be wrong. On the other hand I do have my appetite back. Plus, 3 inches growth in 2 weeks! Holy Cow! So I am thinking...growth spurt all around.

She also checked my cervix and it is long and closed up tight. She predicts because of Z's birth and the way I am going that I can "go the distance". Which means I will probably make it 36 or 37 weeks! Whoo-hoo!! Such good news! Of course, she can't predict 100%, but I believe it!!

26 Week Belly Pic

My son told me that he will love me no matter what size I am. Awww...and a little ouch in there, too. He can no longer put his arms around me all the way and he likes to point that out to me all the time. :-)

OB Appointment

Blood Pressure: a little high
Weight: +1 - total 22lbs

I love my OB, but I am glad I am going to a specialist also. My OB nurse was not at all concerned about my lack of weight gain, which we all know is not good at this stage of pregnancy with twins. She talked all about how our body knows when to hold on to food blah, blah, blah. But I know that one baby can pull its nutrients from me, but two babies can't without some extra calories in there. My lack of weight gain tells me that the girls are using ALL my extra calories. It is just frustrating for my OB nurses to know so little about twin pregnancy. On a good note, I heard the heartbeats and they were loud and strong. She had no trouble finding them and they were just beating away.

Olivia has moved so she is laying diagonal with her head down and Abigail is squished down there at the bottom with her head right by Olivia's still. The position that Olivia is in is SO uncomfortable. She is mostly sideways and when she stretches, whoa!! When I have a BH contraction there will be this huge lump on the top of my tummy. I am not sure if it's her butt or what, but it is kinda alien like. And when Abigail moves, she is grinding against my pelvis and bladder and whatever else she can reach. Poor baby, she is probably really squished down there. Ahhh...the joys of twin pregnancy.

Perinatal Appt

Blood Pressure: good
Weight Gain: 0 - 21 lbs total

Abigail: 1 lb 13 oz
Olivia: 1 lb 15 oz

Our doctor moved to a new beautiful office and it was great! We could tell a big difference in the sonogram this time. Things are getting pretty tight in there and we didn't see much. Abigail was not cooperating and didn't show her face this time at all. Plus, she was not moving like she usually does. Now Olivia on the other hand was just squirming and moving all over the place. When the tech tried to get a reading of the blood flow through her cord, she had to chase her around. Finally, she said forget it! We got a really good 3D shot of her face.

They are still head to head, but are now on their sides, not heads down, which totally throws me off. I used to think I knew when each would move; now I am not so sure. Abigail was always the mover during sonograms and she is on my left side. Olivia is our laid back one on the right side. When I lie on my left side, I feel hard almost frantic movements from Abigail. When I lie on my right side, nothing. But now I am wondering if I am feeling both of them kick when I am on my left side. Who knows?? They do move around quite a bit when Gary or Zachary talks to them. They will just kick and kick.

Now, as for me; No weight gain = a bad thing at this point. It's not serious or anything. I just need to get in those extra calories. See, the thing is - I have zero appetite. This is the one time I can have milkshakes, high fat dressing, real butter...Ugh, I just don't want it. I know I will look back at this time and yell at myself to take advantage of it! So, my goal is to drink more carnation drinks and more small snacks throughout the day. Hopefully, I will pack on those pounds. (This is the only time you will ever hear me say that :-)

Twins...no twins...Twins!!

When we had our first sonogram, they saw two sacs

They said they don't call it twins until they see heartbeats, but...to us, it was twins! Then when we went back to see heartbeats a few weeks later, my RE couldn't see a second sac. They said my body just reabsorbed it and we now have 1 perfect heartbeat. Because of IVF, I had an internal sonogram every couple of weeks and at every one they did not see a second sac.

In December, at my regular OB appointment, I had my first external sonogram. As soon as they put the wand on my tummy...BAM!! There they were side by side.

My DH was so excited!! I was happy but more nervous because I knew how hard it was to care for 1 infant, not to mention 2. My DS was also super excited about there being 2. He knew all along there would be two because we showed him the embryos picture with 2.
